Severn Trent uses Funke BI-Adapter and VPC Pipe Coupling to renew rocker pipe from difficult manhole

A team from Severn Trent Water trialled the Funke BI-Adapter® and VPC® Pipe Coupling recently on a tricky rocker pipe replacement job as part of a project to re-lay a 70m stretch of 400mm gravity sewer pipework.

Two 300mm rising mains discharged into the upstream manhole, which was also the location for Severn Trent’s over-pumping point. In order to renew the rocker coming out of the manhole, the team were originally going to have to shut down both pumpstations which fed into the manhole. This would have caused significant disruption to a busy main road, and would also have incurred very high costs due to the site needing over 25 tankers to manage the flows.

By utilising the Funke BI-Adapter®, Severn Trent’s team were able to fit this without shutting down either rising main, and completed the connection externally using the Funke VPC® Pipe Coupling to join on to the replacement gravity sewer pipe. This also had a significant health and safety benefit, in that the team did not have to enter the confined space of the manhole to break the old rocker out.

The Funke BI-Adapter® is ideal for situations where excavation to expose the outer surface of the pipe is risky or difficult. Once the Funke BI-Adapter® is installed, the Funke VPC® Pipe Coupling can be used to connect to the downstream sewer pipe.
